Malama Learning Center
Kapolei, Hawaii
The design of this nature center on the site of a high school required a sensitivity of its natural surroundings in Kapolei, Hawaii. The building appears to be a solid block where the different departments are fit like puzzle pieces within. This reading belies the organization of the building which is straightforward with a central circulation corridor off of which single loaded corridors are arrayed. These wings allowed for natural ventilation to the classrooms as well as a transparency to the activities inside. A green roof shelters the majority of the building from heat. Ceiling louvers in the main corridor provide diffuse light and articulates the wide expanse as a gathering space for the entire building. In collaboration with John Szot. Meritorious Award.
